BI-110: Bible Study Methods: Citing Sources

Library resources for BI-110: Bible Study Methods & Tools

About citations in Turabian style

When writing for this course, you should cite your sources according to the style described in Kate L. Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses and Dissertations—often referred to simply as “Turabian.” Turabian's manual is based on the house style at the University of Chicago Press, streamlined for use by students.

Before you start writing, you must decide whether to use the Notes-and-Bibliography style (with either footnotes or endnotes) OR the Author/Date style (with parenthetical references).Within each style there are a few points that are a matter of choice, but the important thing is to use the same style consistently throughout your paper. If you're not sure about any of the details, check with your instructor.

Citing the Bible

Citations

We cite the Bible differently from modern books. A citation normally consists of just book, chapter and verse (without author, date or page numbers). You will normally use the same version or translation throughout, so you only need to identify it at the first citation.

♦ First citation:     Gen. 44:13 (KJV)

♦ Later citation:    2 Pet. 2:16

The Henry Buhl Library at Grove City College offeres detailed guidelines for citing the Bible in Turabian style.

Abbreviations

In your citations you may write out the full names of the books and of the different versions of the Bible, or you may use the traditional or shortened abbreviations. Whichever you use, pick one schem and use it consistently. These lists are taken directly from Turabian:

♦ Old Testament Abbreviations (PDF)

♦ Apocrypha Abbreviations (PDF)

♦ New Testament Abbreviations (PDF)

♦ Bible Version Abberviations (PDF)

Online style guides

♦ Turabian Quick Guide is the official guide from the University of Chicago Press, publisher of Turabian's manual.

♦ Chicago/Turabian Documentation Style offers a more detailed summary from the Writing Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. You can also download the guide as a PDF document.

♦ Georgetown University Library offers an online guide that describes the Note-and-Bibliography style and the Author/Date style on separate pages. This format may help you to avoid confusion between the two.
